A Sedentary Lifestyle is just not for me.

couchpotatoSo, its been interesting being a non-runner.  It definitely has its perks, don’t get me wrong – but I don’t think I like it.

It has been nice to NOT go outside in the cold.
It is nice to have more time to play video games, watch TV and rediscover the joy of reading.
There has been more time to spend with the family, and our road-trips and weekend events are easier to plan.
Less Laundry to do, and it doesn’t smell nearly as bad.
Now the down points:

I don’t get tired as early, and don’t sleep as well.I have to be more careful on what I eat, or the numbers on the scale go up.
I don’t feel as full of energy.
My pants get tighter.
I don’t get the joy that comes from running. (aka, no runner’s high and no sense of accomplishment)
I generally just don’t feel “good”

Another interesting aspect of not-running, is how the daily aches and pains change.  (Notice I say change, not come or go away. I have come to the conclusion that I have hit the age that there are aches and pains no matter what.  I’m dealing.)   When running, my plantar fasciitis is much more painful.  I am a little bit disappointed, but even with not running, it is still there – Its just not bad enough to need taping or anything like that.   My hernia repair from many years ago gets periodically sore/tight when I’m not running (or when I over-do it running for that matter.)  My calves on the other hand, haven’t been sore since I healed from the Marathon.

I am looking forward to starting back up.  Knowing I work better with motivation, I have signed up for the lottery for the Cherry Blossom 10 miler, and I have picked out the resolution run I will be doing (probably with my Son!)  I did the same resolution run last year, and had debated doing one in Annapolis this year, but haven’t been able to find any information other than a brief mention.  Either way I need to get registered for it ASAP!

So, in other words – today is my last day as a non-runner.  I’m bored with it. (Can you be bored with NOT doing something?)   This is your warning, regular blog posts are now coming!

About

I run, because I am a runner. Having realized that I have always "been a runner" - even when I went years with out running, I am learning how it has integrated itself in all aspects of my life. When I started running in highschool, my perspective on life changed. Funny that I didn't realize how much it had affected it until just recently.
