2016 Across the Bay 10k in Annapolis Discount!

As many of you know, I have been a race ambassador for the “10k Across the Bay” in Annapolis for the last two years.  Running across the Chesapeake Bay is one of my favorite races – and even having moved away, I am not giving it up!  It is something my son and I plan on doing together as long as we possibly can, even if it involves air-fare!

Well this year is no different, and you can get a discount by using my Ambassador Code!  Just go through the registration process on active.com at:
https://endurancecui.active.com/event-reg/select-race?e=24297353&_ga=1.32478712.7578043.1457553010

And enter in AMBNEIDHARDTR16 for the discount!

Who doesn’t like the idea of discounts?

Running outside in the cold of winter

I know, since you didn’t hear from me this morning- you were thinking “Jeez! He has already given up, and it was only day 3!!”

I’m very pleased to say that this is not the case.  The actual reason – is that I decided that running on the dreadmill was silly, and instead should be headed out side.  Mostly because I hate dreadmills…    So, despite it being the end of January, I was going to brave the cold and head outside for a run after work.

New beginnings for am out-of-shape Once and Future Runner

So, welcome back to both you and to me!  It has been a wee bit of time since I have posted, and I have to say that a whole lot has occurred in that time!  Let me pay catch up.

First and foremost, for another 15 minutes or so, I am unemployed.  I left Volunteers of America Chesapeake on Wednesday of last week, and promptly drive down to sunny Florida!  You see, even though I am a New Yorker through and through, I am more than a wee bit tired of the cold and the snow.

Ok.. So maybe it is that day..

Last year, Maryland seemed to forget that it wasn’t NY, and they was far too much white stuff.  That lead me to job hunt in Florida.  I have been reassured multiple times that it is very rare for snow to fall in Florida, so here I am!  Sitting on the couch in my hotel room (side note: Home2 Suites by Hilton are very nice,) waiting to head to work here in Tallahassee, Fl!

I’m not going to go into the job at this time, as I want to ensure my unemployed status is a temporary thing first!

The job is obviously not the only New beginning as we have rented a house as well, a marvelous place with plenty of room for the family until we buy.

The last New beginning…  it seems that I may have let myself slide into the worst shape of my life.  I do have countless excuses for this, but it seems silly to waste time on those.  Instead I will just mention that I weigh more than I ever have, and am wearing the largest sized clothes I ever have.

Needless to say I don’t feel good, like I do when I am in shape (though I still say round is a shape) and a new job in a new (warm) state seems like the perfect time to fix this!  Both last night, and this morning I pounded out a couple of miles on the dreadmill, and had some rather bland oatmeal for breakfast.  I have great plans for healthy low calorie dinners while I am here on my own, as well as days of multiple workouts.  My intensity rate well need to remain fairly low, as I want to avoid being the limping new employee, but I think that nasty be a good thing with how I like to overdue my restarts.

A New Yorker in Tallahassee Florida…. If that doesn’t supply me with things to blog about than nothing will!

I will keep you updated!

Hotmess

The title is the week.. I have been a hot-mess all week.  Tuesday was supposed to be a five mile run – but turned into 3 as the cold & humidity made me unable to breathe.  My morning running partners – Zully and Suzanne were super understanding (or happy to run a shorter distance) and made sure I didn’t collapse on the way back.

Thursday I had to start by warning them that my hernia (lucky me, I still have an inguinal hernia) was bothering me – so I wasn’t sure if I was even going to make it to the first building before turning back – but I did!  I actually finished the run with no problems.

Zully and Tim were meeting this morning at six am to do ten miles.. I don’t do  6 am on Saturdays.  Suzanne (who apparently doesn’t do six on Saturdays either) agreed to meet at 6:45, and do the second part of their ten mile loop.  The plan was that we would do another loop to get our ten.

The run went well, but we decided to NOT do the second loop. Some blisters on my feet, humidity – all contributed to bailing. Though I think it was a good call.

September Stridebox

So it seems I have somehow never posted about Stridebox.  I have NO idea how that has slipped through!

When the box arrives, its like a pleasant schrodinger's cat! No risk of dead things, just an unknown amount of cool stuff!

For Father’s Day last year (that’s right, I’ve been getting these for over a year and never posted), I received a subscription to Stridebox.  What is stride box?  According to their marketing blurb on their website:

StrideBox is a fun and exciting way to discover running products and accessories. Each month, as a member, you will receive a curated box of apparel, accessories, and nutrition products to fuel your training sessions, workouts, and races.

According to me – its like a runner’s grab bag!  It will contain one gadgetry thingy (lights for my shoes, stretching band, no-tie shoe laces, water bottle, etc), some sort of race-refueling stuff (gels, powders, bars, etc) and who knows what else?

Chaffing = Rest Day

After 30 hours of healing!

After 24 hours of healing!

Today’s schedule was to meet a buddy for a 5 miler, then 2 with the kids but a problem arose.

I didn’t choose my clothing very wisely yesterday and had a pair of old-school (literally old-school- I’ve had these shorts for 15 or 20 years) cotton shorts to run in.  They not only rode up on one leg, but proceeded to rub…  as other runners know (or will at some point) rubbing leads to chaffing, and chaffing leads to pain.

So…

Rest day.

5 at 5

Thursday (and Tuesday) mornings mean 5 at 5!!!  At 5 Am, over on the Crofton parkway a random group of Crofton-area runners meet up and do a five mile loop.   Around the parkway, with Eaton added in to make it 5 instead of 3.  (This is necessary, because i am not doing 3 at 3.  I’m asleep at 3.  Not like that Crazy Go Believe Conquer blogger who did 10 at 3.)

Usually Tim is able to join us,but he had a “thing” last night that kept him out late, so it was Zully and myself joined by Suzanne, the controller where I work.  I don’t know if there was an alpha-female thing going on – but our normal 9:15-9:45 pace was shot-down!  We had a couple of miles in the 8 minute range, and the rest were very low 9’s!

They did deny this when I mentioned it…

No pictures today.. Just  a quick update!

Running with old friends and new

The summer has been on-again, off again as far as running is concerned. As soon as I get a couple of weeks under my belt, a family or work emergency crops up that prevents it for a couple of weeks.

No complaints here, as I have been able to take care of things – so it’s all good!  I’ve just avoided posting until I felt like it was going to remain on-again, as how many “restart” posts can I do in 2 months? It just gets silly.  So, since I am claiming to be on-again full-time, lets take a look at the routine.

Sony Smartwatch 3 – initial impressions

sonywatchSo, I have always used my phone for tracking my runs, but recently decided to branch out and see if there were better solutions, that still allowed me to track my runs the way I like (aka – use runkeeper.)

After looking online, I saw that the Galaxy  Gear S,in theory, would do everything I wanted and more! Heck, its even a phone on your wrist!  Then I saw the price tag for verizon.. ($400), ok.. moving on…

The Sony Smartwatch 3 on the other hand has a gps chip in it, and can store up to 4 gb of music.. So it can track my run AND play my music? BONUS!!!!!

I watched ebay, and found one for $110 bucks.. Significantly less than the $400 of a Galaxy Gear S on Verizon.  Reports online were favorable- so I took the plunge!
