#Janathon Day 1 – Running after the Flu and Hip-Issues.

So a new year brings a new… JANATHON!!!!!!

So what is Janathon?  It is a commitment to do something physical for every day in January.  Yesterday, being January 1st – was the first day of Janathon – so off on a run I went!

1jansplitsNow, December was a bit of a rough month. I got the flu that was going around, which knocked me down for over a week. Then, as I recovered from that I started suffering from some hip pain.  I’m still  not entirely sure what it is, and it is still there (although it has lessened.) From talking with my wife, the symptoms are very similar to her IT Band issue (I have hip pain, knee pain, leg all together is tight..), but it is also reminiscent of the pain I felt when I had my hernia.  The good news is, running didn’t make it worse – which is different from my hernia issues…

But anyway… With it being a chilly 40 degrees (did you catch that Jeremy? CHILLY 40 degrees…), I tossed on shorts, tech shirt and jacket – and headed out the door.   I had some new gear (arm band, shirt) that reviews will be coming on – but for now, I will just say that everything was satisfactory.  The run went well, especially considering December was fairly run-free (actually, most of 2012 was pretty run-free), so I am pleased with  my splits.   It had the usual “first run in a while” issues – breathing wasn’t as smooth as I might want.. Muscles weren’t as responsive as I might want… etc.. etc.. etc..  The reality is, I enjoyed it and it felt good!

Highlight of the run – after coming around a pond and returning to the road, there was a lady riding a bike… I passed her. What speed she was going, and whether it was leisurely or not – is irrelevant.  The fact is while running,  I passed an  old lady on a bike.   Then 5 minutes later got smoked by another guy out running.  I figure he wasn’t running as far though, so its OK.  He was probably a “new years resolution” runner – just left  his house, and ended up walking because he started out to fast… I’m sure of it.

Great run today, and lots to talk about this month!  More to come!

Runtastic makes a pretty map.. So I will include it here for your enjoyment:

About

I run, because I am a runner. Having realized that I have always "been a runner" - even when I went years with out running, I am learning how it has integrated itself in all aspects of my life. When I started running in highschool, my perspective on life changed. Funny that I didn't realize how much it had affected it until just recently.
