I have to admit, Looking back at September, I am really proud of myself! (To arrogant?)

I ran 126.6 miles in September.

I ran more in September, than in any other month in my adult life.

I ran more in September than in any TWO months combined since I have started tracking it in Runtastic over a year ago.

Dreaded runs can be the most fun.

So, I had an interesting one.  This week I had a 5 miler on Tuesday and Thursday, and a 10 miler scheduled on Weds.   I have to admit to you I have dreaded each run this week.  My legs are tired, and I simply do NOT like running on a schedule that someone else dictates to me… Even if that schedule makes it the most likely path to not being injured for the marathon.

Only my wife gets to tell me what to do… And apparently Hal Higdon…sigh.

Tuesdays’ run was made a wee bit worse based on the fact that my GPS was lying to me.  It kept telling me i was running slower than a 10 minute mile, when i knew it wasn’t the case.  It told me I hit the one mile mark, past the point that I knew it should have…

grrr….

But on a good note, my son came with me on his bike- and that is always fun!

On Weds, I had a 10 mile run on the books.. Which means it gets dark halfway through my run.  But I went anyway – and I FLEW!!!!  I was running in the sub 9 minute mile the whole way.  Everything just felt right!  My choice in roads to run along was questionable,  but maybe the fear of getting run over kept me going!   I had spent all day dreading it – and It ended up being one of my more enjoyable runs…

Life is good.

So tell me, have you had an exercise experience you dreaded that turned out GREAT?

18 Miles…. BOOM!

So, my long run for the week was 18 miles – longer than I have ever run before!

I have to admit, I was a wee bit nervous about it. I logically knew (or at least was pretty sure) that I could do it, but 18 miles… 3 hours of running… Wow, that’s a long time!   But it was on the schedule (and after all, 26.2 is even longer…) so I headed out at 10 am on Sunday.

My goal was to maintain a 10 minute per mile pace, so I really concentrated on that with some success.  While I took a different route than my 14 miles (something about needing to do 4 more miles..), the ending 5 or 6 was the same..

Weight

scale

It’s such a weird thing for us to obsess over, yet I suspect we all do at one point or another.  I know some people obsess over it because the number won’t go up, but I think the majority of people are really wanting the number to go the OTHER way.

So we exercise…  Which is effective, but also counter productive if you are ONLY looking at the numbers.  After all, we start to work our flabby selves out – and we build nice firm muscles.  These muscely- things have weight also, so we lose fat and gain muscle.. lets look at how this could work out..

Starting weight – 10 lbs fat, + 10 lbs muscle = Starting weight.

so.. I’m thinking we might have this whole using the number on our scale to define progress – wrong.

New Record!!!

So, I went out for my five-mile run last night (No, that’s not the new record.)  My feeling awesome about running, because I rested – continues!  I let my legs pick the pace (still not the Record) and went at the speed they wanted to run!  In fact,I even told them to slow down, as I questioned my ability to keep it up for 5 miles.. You know what they said?

no

They couldn’t Bear the idea of running at any other speed! Read more ›

Sometimes, you just need to rest… And you are better for it!

So, I’ve been quiet lately.  The good news is my running hasn’t been as quiet as my blog postings, but it has been close!

Saturday I had a 16 mile run scheduled. I didn’t do it.  My legs have been constantly in a state of tired or sore since the half marathon (and most of the time before that if I am going to be honest here.)  My long-run partner for Saturday developed a bad chest infection and couldn’t join me.  We were going to be joined by another friend for the last 8 or so.

I decided to just do an easy 8 with a friend I hadn’t seen in a long time.  That 8.72 was a blast!  We talked about a bunch of things and just enjoyed the run.  It turned out we were running at a snail’s pace (I had the volume off on my phone so we got no updates at all.)  It didn’t matter, as it was simply a nice run.  And Derek, who normally only runs 3 miles at a shot – did 8.72 with no issues! I Remember.

12 years ago, I was working help desk at a small company in Upstate NY.  One of our analysts was on the phone with a customer in NY, and that was how we heard about it. As we continued to work, we got further updates – as many of our customers were in the NY area.

We turned up the radio, and monitored the internet for as much information as we could, as we sat there in fear and in horror.

Today I am not going to post about running.  Today? I remember.

neverforget

I will also share with you the link to CNN’s 9/11 memorial. —– <HERE>

Parks Half Marathon 2013 – Race Report

So, I decided on Saturday, to sign up for the Parks Half Marathon in Rockville MD.  When was the race? The following day.  At least there was very minimal time to get nervous? I have to say I LOVED the Shirt.  Super bright orange long-sleeve tech fabric.  But I haven’t taken a picture of it yet.  After I do, I will edit it and put it in the blog.

I had done a quick Google on the race before signing up for it, and found wonderful reviews of it – and that it had not closed its sign-ups!   So, early Sunday Morning, I was wide awake at 4 AM, despite my alarm being set for 4:30, for my first half-marathon.  I had gotten my outfit together the night before (it is actually color-coordinated so I get to call it an “outfit”), and set both my Camelback, and my ifitness hydration belt up, as I couldn’t’ decide which one to wear.  I drank my morning cup of coffee (nothing happens without coffee), ate a half of a breakfast sandwich, and left around 5, in order to arrive at 6.
