So, by the time this auto-posts, I should be at the starting line of the Marine Corps Marathon. Or somewhere around it at any rate.
I am writing this the night before, as I prepare to toss and turn in bed.. The Expo was a success –

So my son ran the Healthy Kids fun run! I asked him if he would like a blog post about this – he said yes, but couldn’t remember much about it. My wife suggested it be done as an interview!
So how did you like the fun run?
I really really enjoyed it. I really liked how it went by quickly, and how it felt good rooting other people on – helping to give them something to think about. Read more ›
I haven’t posted much, as I simply don’t have much to say! In four days, I will be running. I have looked forward to that day for three years, and have been training since April of this year.
The taper runs seem short. As an example, i couldn’t even remember my 3 mile course last night – as it had been so long since I ran a distance that short!
Just working out new logistics, as back packs aren’t allowed for spectators.. That means my wife won’t be carrying my change of clothes. This will be the first year I actually use the baggage check!
The weather is looking a bit cooler than I would like – but sunny, so I am totally not complaining!
There is today’s nervous rambling for you!
So there are 8 days and some odd hours until I run 26.2 miles.
I won’t lie, I’m a bit nervous. Though, I also have to admit – that even more than the nervousness, I am REALLY excited. In less than 8 days, I get to go to the expo (if yelling SQUEEE!!!!! was more manly, I would totally do that. I love expos.) get my bib, all sorts of free stuff and get REALLY REALLY excited and nervous!
The cool thing, is that it looks like I have people coming out to support me. The Curvy Roadrunner is going to be out at mile 22 cheering on her blogging (and other running) friends! I have a coworker that is planning on timing his run (not the marathon, just his normal Saturday run) through Rock Creek park, so that he can be there cheering for me.
I know my family will be somewhere, but my wife hasn’t decided where yet. I have had several other co-workers claim they are going to come out and cheer as well.
It’s unfortunate that the 5 or 6 hour drive is a bit far for my folks to come cheer, but I know they will be there in spirit (my dad is a former Marine.)
I suspect that having people I know and care about there to cheer me on, will definitely add to the day!
On the 15th of October, the Marine Corps Marathon released the following:
Dear Runners,
Since the government shutdown occurred, the Marine Corps Marathon continues its coordination with hopes of a conclusion in time to host the event without impact. Without a resolution to the government shutdown this week, the MCM as planned is in jeopardy of being cancelled.
While still considering and exploring all possible options, the MCM has targeted this Saturday, October 19 as the date to officially notify runners of the status of the event. It is sincerely the hope of everyone associated with the organization of this event that MCM participants can run as planned.
Like everyone else, the idea that the Marine Corps Marathon would be cancelled was devastating.
In October of 2001, after the worst terrorist attack that this country has ever known, The Marine Corps Marathon went on.
The runners ran by the damage done by people who hated our country. Fear could not stop the runners. Read more ›
This last week, I had moved my 20 mile run to Monday, as the weekend had involved an out-of-town amusement park trip. This put me in an interesting position, as I had 20 miles on the very first day. With my 30 mile weeks that were on the schedule – it this put me in line for my very first 50 mile week.
Oct 7th – 20 Miles
Oct 9th – 5 Miles
Oct 8th – 9 Miles
Oct 13th – 16 Miles
Amazing! That absolutely blows my mind!
It is amazing to me, that at the beginning of this training, 10 miles was a loooooong run to me. Now? I did two days with over 15 miles in a week!
Marathon training definitely changes you.
The weather has been in the high 50’s and raining here this week, so I have pounded out my two runs thus far – on the treadmill. My son joined me for half of Wednesdays run, but my 8 last night was on my own.

The one on the right is actually broken, and won’t raise/lower. But my son enjoyed “running with dad” regardless!
I’m spending a lot of time thinking about the Marine Corps Marathon lately. Read more ›
Now, I realize we are still 17 Days and 22 hours away from the Marine Corps Marathon. I am not delusional and thinking I have already finished it! I Swear!!!!!
On my twenty-mile run, I had a wee bit of time to think. I have been focused on the Marine Corps Marathon for 3 years now. I have spent a good chunk of those years training for it, just to have it derailed for two of those. But this year I am going to start AND finish it – even if I have to crawl or do it on crutches!
So what is after that? I have been exercising based on the Hal Higdon Novice 1 training plan (with slight modifications because I don’t follow directions well) for six months now. Read more ›
That’s right! The Long-Run-Train has been put into storage for a few weeks, as we have entered the taper-period!
I was supposed to do 20 miles over the weekend, but with a trip to Hershey Park – it didn’t happen. Fortunately I was able to take a half day yesterday, and get out there in the pouring rain and get it banged out!
