Running in the cold – you may not be as fast as you feel you are.

Last night I got out of work earlier than usual.  That worked out quite nicely as I got to run in the light!  I went with one less layer this time, no under-armour on the top.  I regretted that for the first mile or so. I never hit the point that I was “warm,” but I was  not “cold.”  I think I may stop messing with WHAT to wear,  I seem to have it figured out now.

I felt good out there last night, I was trying to concentrate on lifting my legs and letting them drop the whole way. I tried to lift them as soon as they hit the ground – as the POSE book said, and I felt like I was FLYING!  I also quickly understood why the book says you need to focus on building your core muscles. I could feel it BIG TIME.  When I got back – I was a little disappointed at my time.  I felt like I was doing at MOST an 8 minute mile.  This was slower than I ran at the beginning of November.  Regardless of that, it was a good run – and my calves/legs are feeling it this morning.  A little bit of soreness always lets you know it was a good workout!  Read more ›

Running in the Cold and Dark – and loving it.

Me in my Winter running gear!

Another chilly run done and under the belt. When I started out last night at around 4:50, it was a balmy 35 degrees. I found out that once the sun goes down – the temperature drops FAST!!! By the end of the run it was quite chilly and I was glad I was finishing my run, not starting it! I had the advantage of already being warm once the temperature dropped, so even without the polar-fleece layer I was just fine!

In the new additions department of my running kit – I have added a head-lamp (the red thing on my head in the picture.) I picked up a set of flashlights on black friday that had 2 head lamps and about 5 hand-held flash lights. I didn’t spend too much time examining them when I put them in my shopping cart, but it seems that the headlamp offers a choice of red or white light. This of course was something I had to play with as I ran. Read more ›

Running in the cold, and trying some of the POSE philosophy.

So with this weekend being a chilly 27 degrees, I thought this would be a good opportunity to figure out “how to dress” for the cold weather.  I did a quick google to find some charts on what people recommended, and decided on this:

Head: Perry the Platypus hat, Sunglasses (snow is BRIGHT), and headphones for music.
Body: Underarmor (though it was generic, not UnderArmor brand), T-shirt, Polar Fleece and Shell.
Legs: Underarmor (again, generic.. And sounds much better than “running tights”), running pants.
Feet: Smartwool Toe Socks, Vibram Five Fingers Bikila

I also had a bandana around my neck – that I could pull up to breath through if needed.  I should have had my wife take a picture of me in my running get-up for the cold. I will do so next time! (I looked goofy.)

Pose vs Chi running – or -When illness strikes the family, the foot does not strike the pavement, so lets do some research instead.

unfortunately on Tuesday, my daughter’s latest meal decided not to stay down and it continued on for about 24 hours.  What this means, is my feet did not go out and strike the pavement.  Even after my wife got home – I was simply too tired from getting up every 45 minutes or so with my daughter.

But, even though I didn’t exercise – I wasn’t wasting my time!  I decided to continue my previous thoughts (and advice I have given others) and have been looking into CHi Running, POSE and Evolution running.  These three have some very similar ideas, such as leaning forward (from the ankle), Falling forward into your next step, standing upright, don’t hit with your heel, and  short rapid strides (though how to run FASTER from this – varies between them.)

Foot Turning, Shin Splints and changing the stride.

So, ever since my long run in my marathon-training attempt, I have suffered from some shin splint pain on the left shin after a run.  This week has been true to form, with the pain returning as my running has.  Then, I began to look at the picture from the Pete Keyes Turkey Trot that I did on Thanksgiving day, and noticed my foot.  If

Notice the red feet on the right.

you look at the picture to the right, you can see that my toe shoes are clearly NOT pointing straight ahead.

After I saw this, I decided to google the phrases  “does running with feet pointed out cause shin splints.”  This brought back many different results.  So, after reading countless pages, some of which did help, others were unrelated in their entirety – I discovered that this was a common thought on contributions toward shin splints.

running with toes pointed outward – was a contributor according to one site, along with “Tight Achilles and calf muscles.” Read more ›

Pete Keyes Turkey Trot 8k Race Report!

I'm the one in the purple shirt and Perry the Platypus hat!

The Sleeper Has Awakened!!! Ok, so now that I have my Dune quote out of my system, My apologies for being absent for so long, We have expanded our locations at Work – so things like running, blogging and sleep fell by the way side.  But the new location is open, which means my free time is returning!  With the coming of the Thanksgiving Holiday – to runners that means TURKEY TROTS!!!  So this year I headed out to the Pete Keyes Turkey Trot 8k at Ostiningo Park in Binghamton.  With it being an 8k, it was a guaranteed PR, since I had never run one before.  In addition to it being a “first time” in that sense, it was also the first time I had volunteered at a race.  I showed up early (in my Perry the Platapus hat)  and helped pass out the Pre-Registrations (A-H!)  It was actually a lot of fun, although the person who put the envelopes in “alphabetical order” had more of a theoretical sense of the alphabet rather than a practical one.  Luckily runners are patient people! Perfect Running Weather!!! Whether my Running technology works or not!

This unseasonable weather – is AWESOME!!!!   Normally I am unable to run whenever we get “perfect running weather” – so I am enjoying it even more!  All those days this year where the sun was shining, are being made up for – NOW!  And I love it.  Last night the timing was going to be tight – Our kids had “Family Dodge Ball Night” (Horace Mann does some of the absolute coolest things for their kids,) and it was Voting Day, so I couldnt’ do a nice leisurely long run in the 68 degree (IN NOVEMBER!!!!) temperatures. I decided that the “run for the ride” was the way to go – so I headed out toward my wife’s work. Read more ›

Last nights run and ponderings on speed. Plus, the 100 up challenge!

It’s amazing to me, but my running seems much faster than it was. I have actually gone back and compared my times, and I am running consistently 1/2 a mile an hour faster than I was a month, 2 months or 3 months ago.  And it feels gooooood.  Last night I went 3.33 miles (3.52 miles according to dailymile) in 27:03 which was 7.3 mph (or 7.81).  I am very happy with this!  If the daily mile distance is correct, then my 5k time at that pace would 23:52. That is only 1 minute off of my PR – and I wasn’t running for a race!  Add in that I have been NOT running – and I am really looking forward to some spring time 5ks!  I think I may be able to get the sub-20 minute 5k – in 2012, that is one of my new goals!

The Mile breakdown according to CardioTrainer (7.3 mph average pace)
Mile 1: 8:14
Mile 2: 8:02
Mile 3: 8:15

I am very pleased with how my running is going!  My legs were sore today – but any ankle/calf/shin pain was very minimal. My quads and hamstrings were sore – in the “I was well used” sort of way.  My breathing still isn’t “quite right” – but I think that is the hardest part of returning to running from a break. It will come.

100 Up Exercise Progress:

So apparently Justin over at the Birthday Shoes read the same article in the NY Times that I (and just about every other internet savvy runner) read.  He was intrigued by the idea of the 100-up being a beneficial exercise and while he had the same thought I did of trying it – he went further and made a website dedicated to the idea of a 100-up Challenge.
Here is what he says on the website regarding the challenge:

What is the 100-Up Running Challenge

It’s simple, really. No matter where you are in your running abilities and no matter what your current training protocol is, the 100-Up Challenge requires you commit to the following:

    1. Establish a benchmark for your current running abilities — write down your last run’s time. Write down how you felt running it. Get it all onto paper in as much detail as you can manage. Did anything ache? How did your stride feel? Any problems you encountered? Commit that run to paper!
    2. Learn about W.G. George’s 100-Up drill and start practicing! — mind that you might not be able to do the preliminary version of the 100-Up perfect the first time, or maybe even the fifteenth time, but attempt the drill as often as you can, so long as each attempt strives for perfect practice (And not just getting it over with). Feel free to continue on running your normal mileage if you like, or take a break and focus on the drill. Do the drill! That’s the whole point of the challenge, and being able to determine if the 100-Up works or not completely depends on following George’s instructions as best you can and practice, practice, practice (perfectly!)!
    3. Run that same distance as in step 1. above 30 days later — now you get to see how you did. How’d it feel? Faster? Slower? Less aches and pains? What happened, if anything?
    4. Now report back on the whole experiment.

What’s the point? Well, the point is to see if the 100-Up actually makes you a better runner or not. And if it doesn’t make you a better runner, well at least you’ll have learned a new exercise and perhaps attained a bit of practice in the art of meditation.

Are you up for the challenge? If so, drop me an email at justinowings at birthdayshoes dot com and tell me about No. 1; that is, if you’d like to share your experiment publicly (though your true identity can always be obscured if you prefer!). I’ll be doing the experiment myself, so you won’t be alone.

I fired an email off to Justin and signed up for the 100-up Challenge. It seemed logical, since I was doing it anyway!

In regards to the 100 up – I had an epiphany last night. I have been doing the exercise after my run.  When I was tired.  Once I stopped and thought about it – it made far more sense to do this when I was fresh – BEFORE I ran. That way the memory of it was fresh as I went out, or if I did it in the morning (I run in the afternoon usually) – at least my muscles wouldn’t be as tired, allowing me to concentrate on the form.  Naturally this occurred to me while I was doing it last night after my run.

So this morning I did it right after my shower – while my muscles were fresh and relaxed. I did 85 reps of the minor – and each one seemed to be ideal form.  I could have done more, but figured I should quit while I was ahead.  If I get the opportunity to run tonight (its “family dodge-ball night” at the kid’s school) I plan on doing at least 50 of the minor right before hand.

I don’t know if it is the 100-ups, or the fact I am being more aware of my form – but it does seem that I am running better.  The fact I am getting more muscle pain of the “use” type, rather than the “ow ow ow” type – would lead me to believe that my form may be better than it was as well.

As last night’s run felt good and fast – I think that is going to be one of my base-line runs for the challenge.

Weekend Long Run.. Running for the love of it.

So Saturday was a bit warmer – in the 40’s – so I headed out on my “long run.”  I tried to keep my speed down to make sure I could actually do the 5 miles I had planned, but I was a bit nervous as this was my longest run since I did the 13 miles that lead to my shin splints.  I had a great run. I went by our local “Occupy” folks – said hi to them (they seemed grumpy today, I had to run around one that stepped out – seemingly to block me) and crossed some more bridges.

Confluence Park - where the Chenengo meets the Susquehanna River

I don’t know why I enjoy running across the bridges, but I do.  We are lucky enough to have two decent sized rivers here – the Chenengo River and the Susquehanna River.  If I plan my run correctly – I can go over 4 bridges without a problem. I love watching the water go by – it’s a very soothing site for me, and I love the sound as well.

The run went by wonderfully.  It has been great since I got back from D.C.. Read more ›

A Brisk Run, and the beginning of W.G. George’s 100-Up Exercise Regime!

A nice 3 mile run!

As I am still “Building back up” (yes I say this a lot.. I am reminding myself as well as you – my dear friends!), I decided 3 miles was a good distance for last night’s run.  I picked a route that I knew was a wee bit higher, so I would have a fair cool down jog to get home.  The route was indeed nice and  I quite enjoyed the run!  I headed over a couple of bridges, and the leaves on the trees I went by were absolutely gorgeous.  My legs felt awesome with no lasting issues (some brief tightness in various muscles, but nothing out of the ordinary), and I felt GREAT!  The ONLY negative point – was the cold air in my lungs.  It was….cold and it made my breathing very interesting to say the least. I didn’t let it get me down but enjoyed the run.  When my cardiotrainer said “3 miles” – I stopped (see how well I am doing on making sure I don’t over do things?.)  Then, I took a gander at my times, and keep in mind – I felt GREAT the whole time – not like I was really pushing but like things were “just right:”

Mile 1: 8:15
Mile 2: 8:11
Mile 3: 7:55
